As of June 1st, the Atlantic hurricane season began.
However, the Pacific season started way before that.
On this page, I have provided some information on
hurricanes and some links to some great sites
where you can go and track the storms yourself!

The
Saffir-Simpson Scale
Hurricanes are rated on a scale of 1-5 depending on one main fact:
Sustained, or steady wind speed in the center of the storm, called the "eye".
These winds cause what is known as storm surge.
A storm surge occurs when the center winds create a kind of
vacuum and draws up ocean water and brings it on-shore.
The storm surge causes a great deal of damage.
Here are the categories of storms that make up
the Saffir-Simpson Scale:
| Category | Winds | Storm Surge |
| 1 | 75-95mph | 4-5 ft |
| 2 | 96-110mph | 6-8 ft |
| 3 | 111-130mph | 9-12 ft |
| 4 | 131-155mph | 13-18 ft |
| 5 | 155+ mph | 18 ft+ |

This year, the National Weather service is predicting a
very active hurricane season. If all of the above names are
used up, they have another list, (starting again at letter A),
that they will then use to name the next batch of storms.

To see the future names of hurricanes and the names of storms
around the world, the National Hurricane Center has all the info you need.
