Ever since I first saw the Wizard of Oz,
I have been facinated with tornadoes.
They can hit anywhere in the world--unlike
other natural phenomenon.
Although they are remarkable to look at,
they can cause unbelievable damage.
Birth of a
tornado
A tornado is a powerful storm which is created when moist,
warm air gets trapped beneath a stable layer of cold,
dry air within layer of warm, dry air.
A tornado is formed when a rotating column of air extends
from the base of a thunderstorm cloud to the ground.
The air moves very quickly upward around the tornado center.
Most tornadoes are weak and cause little damage.
Other tornadoes can be very dangerous, with wind speeds
reaching up to 250 miles per hour.

The
Fujita-Pearson Scale
Just as hurricanes have the Saffir-Simpson scale,
tornadoes have the Fujita-Pearson scale.
Tornadoes are measured by both wind speed &
how much damage is caused.
| Category | Wind Speed |
| F-0 | 40-72 mph |
| F-1 | 73-112 mph |
| F-2 | 113-157 mph |
| F-3 | 158-205 mph |
| F-4 | 207-260 mph |
| F-5 | 261-318 mph |
